Ripon High cheerleaders suspended over Britney Spears routine |
Six of eight Ripon High School cheerleaders were suspended from school for two days over a cheer performed at a football game. The girls danced to a Britney Spears song and lifted their skirts at the end to spell out the school's nickname, Indians. Superintendent Leo Zuber said he couldn't discuss the issue because of confidentiality requirements on disciplinary matters. Parents can appeal suspensions, and Zuber acknowledged he has received one. He said he will investigate whether proper procedures were followed and whether suspensions were warranted.

I think that was cute. Its not like the girls were naked runing across the stands with letters painted on them. This just shows how schools get to carried away with some things. This ending to a already sucky year just is not cool. I feel bad for the girls.

I agree that they needed to be disciplined. If they had acknowledged their poor decision initially, the VP would not have had to "blow it out of proportion" as they claim. Their rudeness created the situation and they need to be accountable for that. The parents who aren't stepping up to tell their darlings they made several poor decisions and need to face the consequences, are missing a teaching opportunity.

They may think the whole crowd was going crazy with enthusiasm for their routine, but I was sitting in the crowds and there was a lot of surprise and disappointment mingled in w/ those screaming students and parents. Those beautiful girls represent Ripon High School, and have a lot of freedom when it comes to the way they provocatively move their bodies already. The coaches have to draw the line somewhere. They knowingly and secretively performed unauthorized moves. Not only that, but many of us witnessed their complete disrespect for their authorities including cussing and inappropriate sign language. If these girls think it's okay to disrespect those in authority over them like that and then create a campaign to defend their poor behavior, then I wonder how they will keep their job if they treat their bosses that way. I fully support Ripon High's Vice Principal, Cheer Coach, and Principal. They are doing an excellent job. ~Stephanie Hobbs

This kind of activity has always taken place in all cheer squads. Why is that they need to be punished with a Two Day suspension. If you force the girls to take the rsponsibility then the coach should as well since he or she is the person charged in making sure they do not violate the rules. You see these kinds of cheers all the way to the University Level. As for them given instructions to leave the field and then to be approached and told they could not be in the "Red Zone" was taking the matter to far. According to the video the pathway they had gone to was not considered part of the field.

The truth is that they knowingly broke the rules. However, it was not a big rule and is really just a senior prank. I am torn between seeing this as a chance to teach the girls a lesson or a chance for everyone else to learn a lesson and just relax.

I graduated from high school 8yrs ago and our cheerleaders showed their butts so what's the problem? Their cheer at the end had them saying wooo as they bent forward and lifted their skirts. The girls wear next to nothing over their chests, stomaches and thighs when not in uniform so what's the difference. If you can show it here then why not there?

I was an administrator at Ripon HS for 7 years. I don't know anything about this incident other than what the cheerleaders said in the video. I think it was the cheerleaders who "blew this out of proportion." It sounds like they were asked to leave the stadium by both their coaches and the VP. Had they left when told to, it sounds like they would have only had detention to serve. In a direct act of "defiance of the valid authority of a school offical" (to quote the ed code) they refused to leave and continued to cheer. THAT is what caused the suspension, not the questionable routine.

The point of the matter is NOT the routine it is that the routine was NOT approved. It is that the girls were not only rude but openly defiant of their principle and their coaches. This behavior did not set a good example for the people in the stands. My daughter is 12 and thinks cheerleaders are just the BEST!! If she acted in this matter the way these girls did and continue to, she would not only be suspended but severely reprimanded at home!

these girls are an embarassment to themselves and the community-why is it that cheerleaders are always finding themselves in the middle of some controversy or other? Cheerleading as a "sport" or "activity" is more about creating scandal than motivating crowds. As long as this behavior continues they'll continue to be sterotyped as bibos

"Bibos"? ... a school's "principle"?Maybe the Indian's Cheerleaders aren't the "onliest" ones making public commentary without approval, proofreading, or intellectual acumen... :(

sometimes we overreact as adults and lose perspective..the time to deal with something like this is not "in the moment" but on the next school day when saner minds prevail..much ado about nothing!

What do you mean the shorts are way to short? They had to go under their Cheer skirts which are short to begin with! Get a grip here folks, throwing them off the field in the middle of a game is not the way to discipline them. This disgraces the entire school, yes the girls should have to apologize to the school and the staff, but the VP actions were inappropriate in the "heat of the moment". Sometimes it's more prudent to hold your tongue and discipline later. Folks these are still teenagers and this was an exellent opportunity to demonstrate the skills that as adults we should have been teaching. Cheer is considered an "after school activity" so unless your going to 'suspend' the football players for unsportmanlike behaviour, this suspension is totally inappropriate!!!

If these girls knew the rules and both them anyways, KICK THEM OFF THE SQUAD!!! I was a cheer advisor for 6 years. If the girls did something they weren't suppose to do, they got in trouble, plain and simple. They don't get to decide the punishment, SORRY!!! Showing off your azz at a football game is classless, girls. I don't think they act this way just on the field....Too many kids get away with being disrespectful these days and I for one am **** sick of it!!

I think this should be a good lesson for the girls, but not in the way many of you mean. Sometimes authority needs to be defied. These school officials presented a fine example of that when they attempted to quash simple free expression. They earned some disrespect, and the expletives to go with it. In civil disobedience, you protect your freedom of expression by expressing yourself anyway and taking your lumps. Good for the girls.

Kids need to be coddled these days. They are all special and you must treat them with sensativity. Give all participants in sports trophy's. Everybody wins. They must not get there feeling hurt at any cost.

When I first read the headline, I thought "Britney Spears . . . what kind of slutty thing did these girls do?" Actually it's quite tame (rated G) compared to what is acceptable for viewing on television. BFD . . . they had the parents' support and it was shorts not g-strings wiggling. I've seen some inappropriate bare assing in my days that were applauded. This was nothing. With all of the things going on that demand the public's attention, blah blah blah blah . . . . Read Kicking the Dog if you get a chance. http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/kickingthedog.php The idiot(s) who really deserve public outrage avoid it.

ONCE AGAIN, NO ONE ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR BEHAVIOR! Should have discussed it with cheerleader advisor. But wait; the cheerleaders probably new it was not acceptable and therefore refused to divulge their plan. HMMM!Ending to your tirade video is even classless, not to mention the spelling.

It builds character. To the parents, teach your children some manners, punish them for their filthy mouths and disrespect for authority. It will be funny when they enter the real world and want whats FAIR and they get EXACTLY whats fair!! Everyone grow up!!

It's a cute and harmless dance and I see nothing wrong with it . . . there is no outrage or punishment when the team name is conviently placed across the breast of a cheerleader uniform as is usually the case. We have all seen cheerleaders uniforms and the last thing of concern is coverage and removing all sexuality from it. Sure, they may have been defiant when approached about leaving after the routine had been performed, but seriously, two days suspension for that? Wasn't or isn't there a fad right now of putting catchy little phrases across the back of girls shorts right now anyways. I went to highschool 5 years ago and the booster club at my highschool actually sold shorts with the team name printed across the be-hind. The Highschool Admin needs to picks it's battles a little better . . .

Cheerleaders are sexualized by nature. The girls are put in nearly non-existant skirts, wear special "bloomers" under them so you don't *really* see their underwear, and do dances that clearly show those "bloomers." So I guess it's just okay if the girls are pretending that this isn't going on? Once they acknowledge how their sexuality plays into the activity, only THEN are they punished? Once THEY have fun with it, take control of it and make it theirs, it becomes wrong. But I guess it's okay if they're only doing it mindlessly for male entertainment. Whatever.

I am outraged as I watch these young women speak of their actions. This is a prime example of why children today are extremely disrespectful to authority. I don't really have a big problem with the "shorts" issue. But, (from their account) it sounds like they knew in advance that their coaches would not approve this and did it anyway - WITH A MOM'S HELP!! Having two young children myself, this behavior by adults to teach their children how to "get away with things" is scary for our society. I'm sure the majority of adults support the cheer coaches and administration for putting up with these girls and their moms!

These girls were suspended for violating the rules, not for the routine - it is about time that students were made to follow the rules - It is sickening to see parents encouraging their children to knowingly break rules. The one cheerleader worried that she is going to miss honors classes that she "is getting bad grades in" maybe shouldn't be cheering at all and instead should be concentrating on studying!

BOTTOME LINE* There are consequences when you are defiant. Its not about showing your bloomers, its about how you talked back and disrespected authority. In the real world you cannot just break rules and laws as you please. Learn your lessons girls and move on. You were disciplined, Get over it.

These kids didn't do anything wrong. Who cares if they had permission or not. The real issue has to do with those in authority. Their pissed because they weren't aware it was going to happen. The real reason has nothing to do with their not being aware, but instead they are pissed because they didn't have the chance to dictate. Their nothing more than (Hitler want to be's). There is certainly a lot worse things shown on our tv's daily. Why dosen't the so called 'do gooders' try to clean up our government or better yet, maybe they should just delete the porn from their PC's. Leave the girls alone! They're only young once, let them have some fun. I bet most of the people who think what they did was wrong are nothing more than 'fat, lazy, dirty, skanky, smelly trailer trash who exist on nothing more than welfare and food stamps'!

Did those Ripon High Cheerleaders tell you that after their "prank" they refused to take the consequences and quit cheering? Did they tell you how they and their parents cussed out school administration at the game in front of all their peers? Good role models I thought it was against the law to try and incite a riot! I have always thought that cheerleaders were to be good role models and work for whats best for school spirit, not be defiant, rude, and offensive. What those girls did and continue to do is not in the best interest of their school, peers, or self. They made decisions, now they should be good role models and deal with the consequences.

Those self indulgent girls spoiled brats with potty mouths can no longer be trusted to represent their school. I cant believe that parents teach their children to do as you like and to bleep with the rules. Then blame everybody but yourself. Perhaps I should choose a few F words to the police officer if I ever get pulled over for speeding. I mean, my speeding would not be that big of a deal. The Hitler Like Police should leave all speeders alone. Rules do not apply to me, do they? I guess the girls are NOT that concerned with their grades since they were not at school this morning. I know this because I saw them promoting themselves on Briggsmore this morning (Friday) when they should have been in school.. So much for AP classes These girls give all cheerleaders a bad name.

its about rules....its about respect for authority! i can not believe anyone would support these brain dead girls!if the principal says something.....DO IT! he is in charge of the school. do you modesto people pull over if a policeman turns on his lights??? So, do you want the cheerleaders to make the rules? this is exactly why our once great country is going down the toilet...no respect for anything or anybody!

For the people that are defending these cheerleaders flashing their asses, do you have daughters and would you be proud watching that along bunch of strangers and boys?? Classless! 2 days? 2 weeks sounds more appropriate or better yet hold on to their diploma until they can learn how to respect the authority. Parents, shame on you. Try raise your daughters with a little bit of class wouldn't hurt. I salute the vice-principle. Turlock, Ca.

Stupid is as stupid does. The only ones that are making a scene here are those cheerleaders giving out interviews, telling how wrong and bad the school principle and teachers were to them. They seem so arrogant and proud of what they have done. No clue! This isn't about their short or their classless surprise...it was the fact they were defiant to the authority after the incident. They need to apologize to the ones in charge and get over it. Stop with the interview and flashing their asses and no one would be talking about this. Including you and me. It was no big deal until they made it a big deal when they disrespect the rules and couldn't shut their traps. I'm done. Salute to all teachers who are underpaid and over worked. Turlock, Ca.

I only know what I seen on the video which you can go to the beach an see MUCH more skin. The shorts were a good touch. Based on the video, I seen no defiance of authority. What I interpreted was school authorities of embarassing the cheeleaders. It should have been done the next school day or off site. Get a grip folks, these are just kids having some fun. They meant no harm.

One of the cheerleaders interviewed is the daughter of the late Officer Bob Winget. As someone said earlier, do parents really want their children flashing their bottoms in front of a stadium of people? I can't believe our beloved Bob Winget would have been proud of his daughter. And I know he would have been very disappointed if she was among those who were defying authority, cussing and using sign language to vent her frustration. Officer Winget expected and received respect when he was on patrol. I would have a hard time believing that his children wouldn't have learned the same lesson--the respect those in authority, whether you agree or not.

Ridiculous. These girls could wear bikini shopping if they chose but these granny panties get them suspended from the squad? I wonder if a group of students with bare chests in stands showing the same letters would have the same suspension? This principal is a control freak who probably gets off on controlling young women.

I support the girls, There's nothing revealing or tasteless about what they did. Perhaps if the put the letters on bare chests and lifted their shirts there would be as much prudish outrage. And YES I have 16 year old daughter, Honor roll, orchestra, student council and decca. I wonder if those on this board complaining have children this age? As for Bob Winget, why don't you let his FAMILY determine what he would have approved of, keep your nose out of it.

I think you suspend or terminate the school official who is so perverted that at the sight of white shorts is obscene. The same shorts were visible when they were school colors at ANY time the cheerleaders jump. His solution is to ruin the students futures because he has a voyeuristic problem. The School owes these students some form of restitution for the damage the school has done.

wow ~ what a sad commentary on the state of our society. The parents of these young women encouraged moves that originated in a burlesque setting ~ remember, the original whore houses? They are condoning no respect for boundaries of social decency, behavior, respect for authority, a sense of injustice when unacceptable behavior is given consequences. The responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of the parents who allowed this to take place, and are obviously encouraging these young women to conduct interviews trying to defend their actions. Who ARE these people that are raising these girls. Anyone see the mom in Mean Girls? Listen, if you want to raise your daughters to behave like this, at least have the decency to spare the rest of us, and direct them to the strip joints, Britney Spears concerts and sleaze hang outs and venues where this kind of behavior belongs. Unbelievable.

What a sad commentary on the small minded adults! Punishing hard-working, dedicated students for disagreeing with an improper, knee-jerk reaction is just one more indicator with what is wrong with education.

I think people need to look at what a lot of cheer programs in our public school have to deal with - "coaches" who act as baby sitters - they aren't there to teach these girls anything that benefits them for college - most of these girls expand their capabilities by paying for dance, gymnastics, etc. What they did was in pure fun not in a sexual manner. I f this was a football player he would have been sidelined most likely. I know so many cheerleaders who have miserable years because their cheer coaches don't care!!!

As an educator it makes me "tired" because this girl states it as "they wanted to doing something special for the coaches and players". Coaches have enough problems w/o a situation that is prone to be considered sexual. Careful dudes you'll be cuffed before you know it for looking at their butts. O and I bet that's the same mom that thinks its cool and ok to purchase alcohol for underaged minors. If they are suspended she should have to serve community hours equal to the same amount of time.

this is not about a "sexual" dance. this is about a squad that did not get their dance approved which is protocol. if the parent who made the shorts knew protocol then she was encouraging them to be disobedient. when the school officials asked them to leave, and they continued to cheer, and then they were asked to leave again, and they went behind the fence and continued to cheer and they had to be told again that they were not allowed to be there. this is defiance. it ceased to be about the dance routine when they directly disobeyed the school official. this is why there are problems with our young people. there is no respect for authority and the parents condone it. take the punishment, girls and get over it.

Wow. maybe everyone should relax and let the parents deal with this. As someone else said I wasn't there and only saw the posted video, but it didn't really seem that bad. Looks like a group of young girls expressing the spirit of youth. If we had all had cameras in the past showing everying we did at that age and being commented on by every news agency across the world, what would have been said of our generation? With what I am sure is an expensive taxpayer education in Ripon, I do find it sad that some have suggested that they have raised mindless young women without a voice to question authority. I applaud these young women for having the voices to question the decision.

"oldprincipal" speaks of the "defiance of the valid authority of a school offical (sic)." The valid authority was not defied because this was an abuse of power (poorly disguised as decency). If the girls stand up to this - and I hope they've the confidence and the help - then they will have earnt their place in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Those who blindly follow the powerful and are so quick to see indecency where there is no harm would be better suited to life under an ayatollah.

Problem 1: Failure to get the dance approved. The school officials had no choice in the matter. The parents who were aware and assisted the girls misguided the girls. I praise defiance. I am of German ancestry. My father, the son of an immigrant fought on the US side in WWII and constantly advised me to question authority and defie all authority that restricted speach, defied human rights. We need to encourage this behavior and not discipline it too much. In this case, however, the original offense requires the actions. Nevertheless, let us always question "the establishment."

in the lower right corner to bring up the settings window.
The suspension was justified. The Squad knew about the approval process and should have run the new ending past their advisors. By not doing that, they were subjecting themselves to disciplinary action. When the administration then disciplined them, they were again insubordinate and admitttedly rude. If Cheer Squads want to be respected as student leaders and athletes (and we hear that all the time!), then they must be as accountable as other student leaders and athletes are. There is no double standard here, even if you feel your infraction is a minor one. This is a wonderful life lesson for these young ladies.
